Challenging the status quo with Dean Samineh Shaheem

Hult strives to be the most relevant business school in the world and is constantly innovating to provide a forward-thinking curriculum. Steering each campus to provide a uniquely global and practical business experience is a highly qualified academic leadership team. Dr. Samineh I. Shaheem is exemplary to that. In addition to her role as Dean of Hults London Graduate Programs, Samineh is a Professor of Organizational Behavior and Leadership. Her research interests are in the area of identity transformation–such as expatriates and their acculturation process–and emotional and cultural intelligence. Samineh eagerly shares her experience, knowledge, and skills with associates and students to develop their core competencies and enhance performance for long-term benefits. Highlighting areas needing improvement and creatively arriving at growth solutions. We hear from Samineh on how individuals can take lead and challenge the status quo. Tell us a bit about your background before Hult? Dean Samineh: The intertwined nature of my multiple roles throughout my career (such as a Learning Development Senior Consultant and university professor) are inseparable and constantly leveraged to engage in purposeful work and to make a positive impact. So when I was working as a consultant, my academic background would color and frame both the process and product.   As a university professor, my consulting projects would breathe life and relevance into my lectures. Today as a Dean, I am honored to be able to merge and manage the kaleidoscope of learning and experiences in order to reach shared aspirations. As a global professor and executive, what key barriers have you seen for women in business? Dean Samineh: The struggles and challenges faced by women in Dubai are quite similar to a woman in Dover. The main barriers facing women in business today is our limiting beliefs and/or mindset. When I say our I mean both men and women. We need to change the way we think about traditional gender roles and jobs. Women need to leverage their natural and learned skills to excel. In other words, they dont need to emulate male characteristics to progress. When I say our I mean both men and women. Women need to widen their professional network and seek out mentors, the way men do. We need to depend more on our male counterparts and partners so that they will help us achieve a more functional work/life balance. Finally, women need to be more persuasive negotiators in regards to salary packages and take risks with potential roles, even if they feel they may not be fully prepared or qualified no one ever is! Why is gender diversity so important at leadership level? Dean Samineh: Well to begin with, in order for an organization to succeed, it should have equal representation of its population at leadership levels. How can the needs of the whole (this includes employees as well as clients/customers) be taken into consideration when theres mostly one gender being preferred and promoted at the top? I’ve completely reversed my leadership style—the result is so much richer and more powerful when you lead from behind and lead with strength. . Studying in tandem with working, whilst challenging, gave me the perfect platform to directly apply learning concepts into my business environment, the competitive landscape, and the real-estate industry as a whole. When I started the program, I was very happy in my corporate role. But my courage and aspirations grew to the point that I took on a whole new direction. The economic future of China is what so many businesses are really going after. Chinas economy has grown steadily over the past thirty or so years. In the last ten years, dispos able income has quadrupled from $760 to about $3000 per person on average (Censky). This new found middle class and their discretionary income is what KFC and many other businesses are focusing on. With an increasing amount of consumption for western type luxury s and with an eagerness to adopt an easier and faster way of life, Chinese consumers are the target for KFC. While income distribution is not at all equal, with many rural Chinese having disposable income of about $1000 per year while urban Chinese in large cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen have around $12,000 per year (Censky), the up and coming Chinese are willing to spend their income on fast food. It must be mentioned that Chinas economic boom and therefore the rise of Chinese disposable income has come with a price when it concerns the country s environmental climate. With the speed of industrialization, China has compromised much of its forests, rivers, and air quality. The effect of startup businesses on economic wealth is a hot topic nowadays. Not everyone agrees with the current policies concerning entrepreneurship and its effect on innovation, job creation and economic growth. Shane is one of those people who clearly disagrees with current incentives given by the government (Shane, 2009). According to him, policy makers should no longer motivate typical start-ups by providing incentives to start a business like loans, subsidies and tax benefits. In recent times, the role of HRM has evolved and today, evi dence based HRM provides a platform where different business functions can come together for organizational benefits. Two Internet written sources Marler Parry (2016) argued that human resource management could be strategic function in nature only when the human resource managers take part in the strategic decision-making. It can happen only when the top leaders and senior managers include HR managers on the table. It is also important that HR managers and HR executives should play more proactive role.
